Howdy Folks,
I am new and desperately in need of kindred spirits for
discussing mutual beliefs. Being as we are smothered in the bible belt surrounded by "believers" its hard to find support outside religion. Is it just me or does anyone else find it difficult not to laugh when otherwise intelligent people quote the "bible" as the ultimate truth.
Later Dudes,

Welcome. Viewed coolly you have to accept that the bible is not a book by an author, but a scrap book of Bronze/ Iron Age press cuttings made by many people over a long time. What sort of press it was, can be judged from the stories it tells of sexual predation, rape, murder, genocide, child and animal abuse etc. So it is a bit like quoting the Red Tops as your authority.
Welcome. You're not alone. Not only do I laugh, but sometimes I might even quote it back at them. Xtians are shocked when an atheist knows their holy book better than they do!
You will find a lot to keep your mind oiled on this site. Enjoy!
Fill out your BIO when you get a chance and Welcome!
Had to go to a funeral yesterday. The church is a fairly middle of the road kind of Christianity but as usual they repeated so the ridiculous claims to the flock. Many of the mouorners are/were very well educated people in various science fields and yet they nodded in agreement . . . sad
Bart Erhman is on You Tube and his discussions on Atheism and Agnostics goes on for hours against some of the greatest mind who he challenges.
My father's parents were missionaries for 20 years in Columbia, South America. My mother has multiple male relatives who are pastors. I believe the bible, like most religious texts, was made to control others.
The Old Testament was written by Moses about 1300 bc as an attempt to explain our existence, and as a moral code.
The Bible wasn't meant to control others, the catholic church is guilty of that though.
Looks like you’ve found the right place to let off steam....welcome to the site. We all know and have experienced the irrationality of believers, they only have their belief in scripture to combat reason with, but when indoctrination is absolute, delusion becomes the norm, and we who use rationality and critical thought, cannot counter the mantra of .....”it must be true, the scriptures say so”! Look forward to hearing your viewpoints, but join a few groups too, we like to have fun along with our philosophising!
Welcome Coyote 1 to this amazing community. You will learn a lot through the topics and opinions of everyone.
I guess rolling your eyes is too obvious...ha ha
Welcome...learn, contribute, have fun...
I find it easiest to just not "engage" when I'm in the midst of all the religious zealots. I've had a couple ask me to join them for various events or activities and I always politely decline. I'm sure they think I'm some kind of introvert - it would never occur to them that I simply don't share their religious views. Doesn't bother me a bit...
Glad to meet another skeptic! Yes! Is cracks me up hearing believers quoting nonsense from a crazy book. I typically quote back a verse they have never heard.
It is funny to think of the Bible as if it is a book of good advice and helpful hints. Like we will be seeking out the advice of how to behave and treat each other from a mixed up collection of threats and promises. These days, Christians are doing all they can to make religion 'relevant' to today's youth. (Christian Rock...ugggg) They are starting to see it as a market strategy these days. Membership is falling in churches in many places so the lengths they go to attract people becomes comical. I always get a kick out of those signs outside places of worship and how they 'advertise' for example. They try to be witty.
Welcome! I’m an NC native so I get it about Bible Belt. Otherwise sane folks spout scripture in public. It’s maddening.
