Any idea, belief, or opinion that requires the use of physical or psychological violence in order to spread is not deserving of respect. Any system of thought that leads one to conclude that violence on others is a feasible option when argumentation fails should be discouraged and shamed. If violence is needed for an idea to spread, then the believers of said idea have admitted to themselves and to everyone else that unless believed out of fear or faith, the idea is useless. Unverifiably, illogically, and epistemically useless. If we in large continue to assert all beliefs and opinions as equally valid and worthy of a priori respect, delusion-motivated violence will never cease.
As an afterthought; Its interesting how many people have killed other people without ever once themselves coming to terms with the reality of death. I wonder how they'd bare it; knowing that in their acts they had ended someone's very being.
Does the idea of self defense deserve respect? Should police be shamed for using violence to arrest criminals?
You have commendable ideals, sure. Unfortunately things are always more complex than we would like, and absolutes are hard to come by.
I am not advocating for absolutes. This post was inspired by the religiously motivated violence that continues to make headlines.
Nothing is ever simple.
