"it's a different world from the one you see in those old black & white movies. cops cared more in those days. people cared more. something happened. everything changed. the whole world feels broken. more & more we're on our own."
must admit i feel like that at times.
that's from Dean Koonz "one door away from heaven".
anyone else here read him?
I'm reading "The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkerson, about the black dispersion from the south into the north to escape systematic genocide. If someone thought the "old days" were a kinder, gentler time, they were clearly WHITE..

                                        i guess it's all relative. most of us older ppl can think of many things that were better in the old days.
I've read a few of his novels. I can't quite put my finger on why, but I find him rather formulaic and contrived compared to, say, Stephen King, who would benefit at times from a good editor but at least has believable characters that I can relate to. Koontz seems to have a new-agey sort of feel to his world-building and character making that turns me off.
My wife likes Koontz though, and she's a professional writer, so there's that. Predictably, she likes him better than King, too.

                                        koonz could never be stuck in any one genre. he always has surprises in store.
his "Funhouse" is better than anything that king ever did in that genre, imo. and then he does something like "The Husband" which is one of the better suspense, mystery novels i've ever read.
then he has a novel in which there are alternate universes & displays an excellent knowledge of quantum physics. he also does the supernatural but to me is way more believable than king.
i can't even begin to understand how anyone could consider him "formulaic".
Do you Really think those old movies depicted reality?!?

@PalacinkyPDX ,
some people dream, imagine things & have insights. they don't take everything literally.
no, and i never indicated that it did.
i just consider some of his prose to be insights.
might resonate with some but not everyone.
