I left one evil world to live in another. The universe is dominated by evil.
I call this "the grass is greener" effect (from the saying, "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" ). Also apropos is "wherever you go, there you are".
My version of this as an extremely privileged middle class heterosexual white anglo saxon protestant liberal in America, is wouldn't it be great if I could move to Canada or New Zealand or someplace that's relatively sane and isn't ruled by the Citrus Caligula. But when you look into it, everywhere you go has caught the same nationalist / xenophobic / fascist cold. They just may not be as sick (yet) as the US. But they will be. There's basically nowhere to hide. My ultimate fantasy is to move to some remote Arctic outpost and watch the world burn from there, living among people who are so interdependent for their very survival that they won't risk being too much of an asshat with me, even if they don't agree with me (would they??).
But the reality is that people are nothing if not irrational and self-absorbed so unless I can catch a gig as a crew of one on a ship headed for Mars or something I'm just going to have to be part of this thing called the Human Condition. Price it in and make the best of it.
