Today is Vietnam Veterans Day, it is bittersweet that a day has been set aside in our honor, while today is the commemoration of the last combat troops leaving Vietnamese soil, the war raged on for another 2 years with both overt and clandestine operations including the heaviest bombing of the war. Peace to all my fellow Vietnam veterans.

I did not know that. I am a disabled, Viet Nam (era) veteran and am glad I did not have to participate in that unjust war. When are we going to learn to quit sticking our noses (and military) into other people's difficulties? The 2nd war in Iraq is another example of stupidity at the highest levels. We are still paying for the Viet Nam war and will continue to pay for the war in Iraq for generations. In my area the military continues to expand it's operations in preparation for the next war so obviously we have not learned a damned thing.

My Richard was a Vietnam veteran as well Glennlab, he would say Peace back at you my brother.

Having lost my father and some friends to suicide because of war, my heart is always full of love for our service members. Nobody gets out unscathed. Even those who got the "good" assignments.

I was in Vietnam in 1970-1972. I also was part of the evacuation of Saigon.

Thank you. I am sorry you were sent there.

Thank you so much for your service. In my book, you are a hero.

Thank you, but I was an unwilling participant, in a war I did not believe in, but I had a draft notice so I enlisted to pick who was shooting at me.

@glennlab My dad got caught in the same shitty situation in 1964. He dodged the bullet, though, and they sent him to Germany instead of Vietnam. Otherwise, who knows, I may not be here to write this.

This is why, in my book, you are a hero. Life really did you raw, but you manned up anyhow. That is fucking rare anymore.

@Piratefish I lucked out and got to sleep every night in Thailand,

@glennlab But neither you nor my dad wimped out. You both manned up when you got called up.

@Piratefish No bone spurs. lol

@glennlab Don't undersell yourself. A lot of people ducked out.

We never should have even been over there to begin with.

Given how shitty the veterans were treated when they returned, being
given one single day in commemoration seems pretty freakin' lame.
Especially since you're all still having to fight tooth and nail for proper medical
and psychiatric treatment through the VA system.

You all got so screwed over, and I, for one, am so damned sorry for all of that.

Thank you
