I have just been watching a BBC pseudo religious programme. Well it is sunday. The presenter was a young Muslim woman. She was bare headed and dressed casually so I wouldn't have known unless she had said so.
She was talking to a humanist celebrant who was explaining that humanist weddings are now more common in Scotland than religious ones.
He thought that the rise in humanism in young people was probably partly due to the fact that evolution was now more widely accepted rather than the biblical creationism of previous generations.
Her reply surprised me . She said her parents put great store in education and she was well educated but the more she saw of the world, every leaf on a tree being different etc brought her closer to god.
I found this a bit disturbing. If a young well educated Muslim can dismiss evolution like that then I see little hope of an "enlightenment" in Islam as we had in Christianity.

Regardless of whether the woman's parents encouraged her education, there are some serious physical threats to safety among Muslim populations about religious beliefs. Like the Stockholm syndrome, the brain sort of does what it needs to to keep her safe. Education can help but it's not enough by itself. It takes being in a safe place for long enough to really start questioning those things. It's doubtful that has ever taken place for her.

I don’t see that she is dismissing evolution. I understand exactly what she means. I feel the same but not in reverence to any anthropomorphic deity. I refer to something that I don’t understand but recognise as an underlying force. Some people just prefer to name it to give it a frame.

Well you don't feel the same then. It is quite different having reverence for nature than having reverence for God.
Apparently many Muslims do now accept evolution and it is taught in some Muslim schools but many still cling to creationism and a form of intelligent design like some Christians do so who knows.
