I love this site because people can parse the bejeebus out of anything, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. I think Knost phrased it in a way to make the most impact. As such, I kinda feel in the first sentence the word "exclusively" would be implied, and in the second sentence, so would, "in addition to toughening them up."

That's how I read it at least.

It's our job to teach how they learn not what they learn

Both are required. Change doesn't happen fast.

It is our job to do both. We need to teach our children to approach every situation with the kindest of intentions at heart, but to be prepared to defend themselves and their loved ones with extreme prejudice should the need arise.

It isn’t an either/or scenario.... we should teach our children the realities of life as well as the responsibilities. Be kind to all creatures, human and wildlife....but also be aware that others will not always have the same philosophy.

Agreed. Otherwise we just perpetuate the problem.
