For a lot of folks today, their "identity" is the most important anchor in this confusing, messy and complex world. In former times, people had basically two anchors: their family and their religion (maybe also their nation, but that was viewed as an extension of the family).
Today, it is their identity and this is largely determined by their chosen affiliation(s), by their membership in one or several "tribes" (what sociologists call "neo-communities" ).

The new freedom to choose one's identity comes with a price: whereas the old anchors where given, something you were born into, the new identities have to be actively sought and maintained, kept alive. You have to prove to your fellow members (be it as a liberal or a Tea Party activist, as an atheist or believer, as a vegetarian or an anti-waxxer or a trans-person ...) that you are really one of them, that you are worthy, in one word: we have to earn our new identities, not once, when we become a member, but constantly.

The result is a permanent struggle for recognition, we are constantly trying to prove that we are the good ones. And the best way in this struggle to signal our virtue is to raise the voice, to lash out against the moderates (they are traitors!). The result is a terrible cacophony.
In their echo chambers, people celebrate their newly found identity, but society as a whole goes to the dogs, because a democratic society needs above all citizens.

We have more and more activists and tribal warriors, but the citizens are on the red list of endangered species. I guess that this development is inevitable, because modernity and globalisation have destroyed or severely damaged the old anchors, and only a small minority, the new elite, is able to adapt to the new situation and make an upgrade to the next cosmopolitan level. But even the liberal cosmopolitans are not citizens in the old way, they are citizens of anywhere or nowhere. Even they have become a tribe of their own.

I think this is what will destroy the world and the only real hope is if we survive long enough to create a new generation of colonists and see them off into space. Too little space and too many idiots who care only for themselves and their own little patch of earth. The nest war of any size likely involving India/Pakistan will involve nuclear weapons and then it is "Game over, man!".

But that is evolution. Following the logic that we need to have the ‘old ways’ how far back do we go to find Utopia. Presumably not before production of electricity or the flushing toilet!

Yeah, I don't have to prove anything about myself to anyone.
That's messed up from jump.

While here in the US the Dem party keeps pushing identity politics, instead of economic and democratic revolution (in hopes of avoiding violent revolution, which I see as more likely eventually), with the exception of Bernie Sanders and AOC, meanwhile the planet cooks and the oligarchs worldwide continue to rule and get richer as everybody else fights over identity and tribalism. If this continues we are all doomed, even the rich who delusionally think they can escape to another rock or at least move on to their underground or isolated enclaves to wait it out and escape climate change.

This post is very Western and probably middle-class centric. For a start I take issue with the whole choosing to be trans thing. Being trans is rarely (if ever) a matter of choice. Lifestyles in general are far far less about choice and far more about your situation. For millions and millions of people the choice is about doing what they need to do to survive. Theres a three near me, brother, sister and her fella. Not a tooth between em, they are up at the crack of dawn trying to score. She is invariably pregnant but never gets to keep the babies. They live in a modern post industrial social democracy but their lives are extremely basic. I know their story is replicated across USA. They cannot be citizens because they are disenfranchised from involvement. The same goes for many in the BME communities. I do not see a disconnect for people who identify in any particular way and their commitment to their communities. One can be gay and British. We have several openly gay MPs. The important thing is that we encourage our citizens to be part of the solution whilst retaining their individuality.

Well said. And sorry I don't get the ident thing, too busy living for that. And what is it about being an activist which stops you being a citizen, surely being active makes you a better citizen.

I feel left out. I can’t think of an identity for myself. Well, I’m sort of an ethnic Cracker but not a very good one.

I know! I’ll be a member of the class of confused, bewildered people who have no identity other than as conscious beings! I’ve already been trying hard to promote myself in that way on this forum.

That’s it!

If I start a confused, bewildered, old persons "neo-community" would you like to join that ?

@Fernapple Sure, why not? 🙂

@WilliamFleming Done.

@Fernapple I’m In too!

Very true and unfortunately modern social media does not help. Because it works hard to split people in groups, for no other reason that there is more information value in that, and information is marketable.

The thing is that actively seeking one's identity makes it more worthwhile + you don't have to put up with some things you don't like (like undesirable family members or having to learn about the evils of religion - pedophilia for one). This new freedom, as you said,is one, one has to work on getting and maintaining. Some of us, non-conformist have to work on this everyday even on this site.

I don't know about the proving we are the good ones. To me it's not about feeling good but doing things that benefit the life sustaining system on this planet. I believe in altruism and am not so much concerned if something directly benefits me personally.
