It’s not the extremes in need of motivation - it’s the middle. If the Dems choose extreme, the middle might settle for what they’ve got..
HRC was middle, but the extremes abandoned her. trump’s didn’t. As long as the R’s view it as a team sport … and the D’s view it as their opportunity to display their individuality ..more of the same ~

I believe Trump won based on his policies.
There was a gross underestimation of how concerned people were with illegal immigration and terrorism at the time. Despite all his bullshit, Trump reassured America that he would keep the country safe and also bring back jobs.
Whomever defeats Trump will win on policies as well, whether they are non white or gay. It just happens that the next President will be white, because America loves him.
In 2020, it will be Bernie.

It is unclear that the level of concern you mention was actually underestimated. Remember that Russia used 420,000 (?) continuously running social media bots churning out incindiary posts. A lot were effectively directed at Bernie supporters urging them not to vote for Hillary.
About 2 months ago, the Senate released a report on the Russian interference with Brexit. They had 150,000 Twitter accounts for that one. Before that were elections in France and Ukraine.

Half right. But just as Bernard would have been trump’s best chance at the presidency in ‘16, the same will be true in ‘20. Remember the R’s silence regarding ‘anything bernie’? ..and their release of ‘anything negative’ with HRC? They’d love it to be Bernard!
My question is - will it actually be trump we’re running against? I suspect it will be paul ryan. In that case, conventional will again be ..safer. It’s gonna be bloody in the Democratic primaries, though.. But (in our system) that’s where the battle needs to happen … as we need to support the victor ..ours, or not.
I don't think it was his policies, so much as it was that, based on the polling data they were given, most people believed Clinton would win easily and in a landslide, many people decided not to go through the hassle of voting. Heck, I almost didn't vote because I was nearly convinced that my vote didn't matter. Other people turned their vote in to a joke, writing in Harambe, their own name, some other celebrity name.
Just a few thousand votes in three key states made the difference.
Republicans don’t care who they nominate (sure they prefer Caucasian and males) but they vote for whom ever the candidate is, regardless of their beliefs and ideas. It’s not a case of being selective, as long as the candidate isn’t like the last democrat elected. I’m certain democrats or non republicans don’t vote in the same manner.

But he and the GOP have refused to take action to stop Russian interference or even interference by other countries. Also, they are willing to use every dirty trick as well as cheat outright with election manipulation. Remember Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004? You can be sure they've been looking for other ways to rig the election. Trumps whole strategy is to game the system while the GOP runs interference. And it mostly works.
