So - who will be joining in with the carol singing this year? How will you handle the obvious religious connection? Happy Holidays!
It's pretty difficult when the family get together. I'm all for joining in with a sing song, but often emphasise the obviously dodgy lyrics to make them sound like a question; "Ding dong merrily on high, in Heaven the bells are ringing - eh??!!??!!". You get the idea.
My family always had fun on Christmas. We were never religious. It was a joyous time of merriment. I still go Christmas caroling. It is fun. I am happy to say Merry Christmas. If people think of the time of year as Christmas, I have no problem using the word.
I don't mind the religious aspect of Xmas...no different than Santa or the tooth fairy our Easter boy.
No need to reject the customs
I like singing carols. I'm not superstitious. They can be vocally fun.
Singing about the baby in the manger is no different to me than singing about Santa on the roof top with flying reindeer.
What I find annoying is the insistence that people are taking Christ out of Christmas. Even if Christmas was the original idea and not Winter Solstice, I find most non believers do not have a take Christ out of Christmas agenda. It the whole annoying martyr syndrome.
Never join in with carol singing, in fact I find the constant playing of Xmas carols for the last 2 months of every year by radio and TV quite annoying.
