God will forgive me
This is another thing which really infuriates me about Islam. The whole concept around that only God can judge us and how he can forgive us for our transgressions is immoral. Again, I’m well aware that other religions have a similar/identical thinking to this. Again, I will remind you, that I’m focusing on Islam here.
I will share a personal anecdote here of an experience I once had. This was when I was a fully believing Muslim. I was looking to buy a new car and a family friend told me about one his friends selling the specific car I was looking for. I called him up to arrange a meeting and met him a few hours later. He requested that I meet him before the evening prayer and kept on mentioning the said prayer time.
When I went to visit him, he was wearing a Muslim prayer hat and had praying beads in his hand. He told me that he was a Allah fearing guy and that the car I was to buy from him was in perfect order. He assured me that I would have no problems with this car in the future. Anyway I paid him the agreed money and he said that the car did not require anything doing to it.
After I left with the car, within ten minutes the motor oil flashing light started flashing. Luckily, my previous car had been of the same brand and I knew that my car required motor oil immediately. Fortunately there was a patrol garage nearby and it was not too much of an issue. I was a bit annoyed but did not give it too much thought. What really infuriated me was a few years later when I had to part exchange my car. The showroom, where I was part exchanging my car, informed me that my car was written of in the past. Hence I would get half of the amount that the car was originally valued at.
I mean the guy, who sold me the car, was very disingenuous! He had clearly hidden behind his religion and I’m fairly sure that he believed that Allah would forgive him for cheating me. I don’t want to overgeneralise here but there are many Muslims around the world who do this! They believe that whatever they do; Allah will forgive them no matter what!! For me, this is clearly illogical from all angles. From a theological standpoint; he cheated me and should be given the correct punishment. However, from an ethical standpoint he should be judged in this life! Not absolved in an afterlife for which there is zero evidence!!!
For me, this notion of only Allah can judge gives some Muslims a safety net of doing whatever they want to do. ‘I’ve cheated a guy; it’s fine only Allah will judge me.’ For me this line of thinking is not only absurd but gives the perpetrator the green light to do whatever they want to do without any personal responsibility!!! This lack of personal responsibility which Islam, apparently, affords you is very immoral in my opinion. This is another reason why I chose to leave the fold of Islam. I honestly think that I have a better moral compass without Islam!!! At least I will take responsibility for my actions!!!
You could substitute Jehovah or God for Allah and Christian for Muslim and you'd be telling an entirely relatable and plausible story. It is not a problem with Islam specifically but with religion generally. Their claim to a "higher" morality is just an appropriation of what is already there, and tends to dilute or pervert rather than strengthen it. If you seriously believe that you have god's approval for what you do then if it diverges from societal morality it's no big deal.
You know there are many religious people in all religions that are crooks. Saying that Muslims are the only ones is not right. Surely you must have come across ones that are honest too.
I saw a great tv programme last night about surgeons in a hospital in Birmingham. The neurosurgeon was Muslim. He prayed everyday. He was smart, caring, dedicated. I found it intellectually puzzling that a man could believe in a soul but understand the possibility that you could destroy a personality with a scalpel blade. He performed a live operation to remove a brain tumour while the spray therapist kept the patient talking. It is my view that the pre ok prayer acted as a meditation to keep him calm and steady.
Off course. However I’ve mainly dealt with Muslims and am only talking from my own subjective experience.
@Agnosticman It's like Catholics thinking that it is ok to do bad things because they can go to confession on Sunday.
True, and Christianity is the same way. Sure, Trump groped women and cheated his workers, but god has forgiven him.
I don't think Trump is capable of knowing he did wrong.
It’s the same for all religions. I talk about Muslims because that is my subjective experience.
