This quote was placed without context. This is a fiction about two worlds, where one was built based on utopian anarchist ideas, and the other in fully resplendent, and highly hierarchical and sexist capitalist society. One of the scientists from the anarchist world visits the latter world in an attempt for mutual understanding. He was taken shopping, and he has hard time understanding the intricate ways where a thing does not end up in the hands of someone who can use it, but sits waiting to be paid by those who does not want nor need to use it, but who has the wealth to pay for it. He is puzzled by the society's fetish in holding on to a thing, whether it is being used or not, only because one pays for it. For us, the idea of private property is so familiar, we hardly question it. We even worship it. This is written from a perspective of the one raised and lived without the concept of "private property" as a gospel, but only as a necessary (and temporary) evil in that it is impossible for two people to simultaneously use one thing at a time.

Interesting and (for me) comforting book.
