Taking single lines from a set of books, without the written context, doesn't really work. You could do the same thing with Shakespeare, Milton, Dickens, etc.
Not supporting the bible; simply pointing out that the evidence in this is dubious ... if I had time and was that bothered I would go to read the quotes in context and then form an opinion ... but I have coffee to drink and a day to live
To me, no context can justify child abuse, rape, slavery or eating your own kids... but I understand what you mean...still, the bible is a book of war, not of love or compassion..
@EllieUnique different cultural contexts .. not too long ago 14 year old girls married in the USA (may still do so - I am not up to date) - there is still slavery around the world, institutionalised in some countries, , homosexuality can be a death sentence in some countries - not sure where eating your children comes from?
The old testament certainly holds a lot of war stories - must admit to being a little biased toward eye for eye, burning for burning, life for life - and they were a vicious blood lusty lot. But some passages are very good guidelines for morals and ethics and sometimes usefully applied to modern times.
Like all supposed ethical guide books - you pick out the bits you want to use.
@ShadowAmicus Leviticus 26:29
@ShadowAmicus using bits of it is to cherrypick and that is obviously what every religious person is doing...still...it’s a dangerous book to use, while searching for moral parameters, since is so incoherent and even immoral in many parts.
@EllieUnique I think if you read the passage about eating children in context you will see that it refers to what will happen when the city is under siege. There were reported cases of cannibalism in some sieges - am told we taste like chicken (old man in Borneo)
Drink wine...I'll do that with no confusion...ha ha
Psalms 104:14 wine that gladdens human hearts,
