I'm wondering... is the online dating thing better for young people than middle aged and older? I feel like it is but not sure why. Different expectations, different age of upbring and social skills, emotional history/baggage?

When middle aged and older people post about online dating it seems to be only negative. I know my experience was very disappointing.

Feel free to chime in here with your ideas.

It probably is. Older people are more inclined to have property and "be anchored." I hear the younger ones talk of being catfished or ghosted, etc. WTF is all that about?

@HomeAloneSunday Yes, and if you half a half acre and a mobile home as I do you are judged a loser. All those winners are running around with $900 phones and working 2 jobs to try and have their American Dream."

I met my second husband via online dating and we had a pretty good run, 12 years.
It can be a good way to connect and meet people. I like this site better than traditional online dating because it’s not so much about dating but connections. Plus it gives you an opportunity to virtually meet a lot of people with similar interests.
I’ve had some really great conversations with people around the world that I’ve met here.
But I’m not actively looking for a love interest at this time so I may feel differently when my situation changes.

I met my Kenyan ex online and we had 12 years. I don't recall it exactly as a dating site but I'm sure it was. We were just something that happened and soon I was talking to her daily online, on computer with video, and on the phone. Without all of those I would not have taken it seriously. I'm not surprised that young people today are fooled online though.

I don't use dating sites...

I met a great guy online. It didn't last long or "work out", but at least I had the chance to meet someone I wouldn't have otherwise. That to me is the value of online dating.

I think we underestimate our own ability to interact and attract potential partners. Is it difficult sure but the the rewards are so much more fulfilling. Online is shallow imho.

Butif there is no one in your immediate vacinity, it can be a way to contact someone. What do you think?

@DevraisA1 its like a modern day penpal in that regard .For the most part it lacks nuance as a way of communication. Like anything worthwhile if two people invest in an effort to connect it can help and even work out well. I find when I communicate with someone I have physical met or know in the real world its more satisfying.

@Tooreen I agree. Talking person to person is the best.

I think dating is more difficult when we get older, and on line even more so because of distance, at least for me. I feel like at my age I have maybe one more shot at a serious relationship, so I have to feel it is right. When I was younger, close to right was good enough.

I'd have to be a young person again to answer this accurately, and it is clear That Is not Going to Happen!

One factor is, it's all they have known. Grocery store aisle? Not. Get a phone number from your waitresses? Not. Even drunk at bars, not. So it makes sense to me that they would be better adapted and frankly, they can have it. I'll take the counter seat at Waffle House.

Online dating does have its downsides, but I probably wouldn’t get any dates without it.

Online dating is like a blind date. You never know who will show up. I learned not to get twitterpated about a man before meeting.

For Your Safety

Drive your own car. I meet at a cafe' for lunch or dinner. Arrive early. I tell the waiter I'm meeting a stranger. "Can someone walk me to my car if needed?"

Different Sites

First tried E-Harmony, a stilted, controlling Christian dating site. Then Plenty of Fish (Plenty of Flakes), OK Cupid (OK Stupid) and Match.com. Scammers abound.

These sites have the usual suspects. Met over 100 men in 10 years. Meeting different men was shocking, hilarious and interesting. I learn from everyone I meet.

False Advertising

With online dating, 80% of people post old photos and lie about their: age, weight, height, marital status, profession and/or activities. Most showed up overweight and much older. 75% of the men expected sex on the first date.

100 Meetings; Two Relationships

Met Dan on Match.com. We dated for three years. After breaking up, we continued as friends and hiking partners. Dan moved to Utah. Lost my favorite hiking buddy.

Since joining Fitness Singles two years ago, I've had better luck finding a fit, intelligent man. That's how I met Bill, a medical doctor, in 2017. He is 10 years younger than me. A competitive bicyclist, Bill owns a private plane, lifts weights and is kind, patient, caring and funny. Great lover.

"Where do you want to go?" Bill asks. Over the Cascade Mountains where I love to hike. "I love your happy feet," he says.

Photos:

  1. "One of the happiest memories of my life is when you took me snowshoeing up in the mountains," Bill said. December 2017.

  2. Bill (left) and friends from his bicycle club training for a race, rode 90 miles with 2,900 feet of elevation gain. May 2019.

  3. Mt Rainier (14,127 feet) in the background. January 2018.

  4. Flying over North Cascade National Park. March 2019.

  5. Bill flew me up Lake Chelan and over North Cascades National Park.

It was snowing at 10,000 feet. Returning, Bill flew 200 feet above Lake Chelan, following the serpentine curves of the lake. Mountain ridges embraced us on each side. From the air, I watched currents changing direction. A magical moment.

A rainbow followed us as we flew down the Columbia River. March 2019.

In looking at your photos.... One thing kept coming to mind.

Man... That is one sexy Beechcraft!

@RiverRick

Bill's plane is yellow. Are you talking about me?

The two men flew to Seaside, Oregon to pick up the wife of a friend. They gave her a ride home.

@LiterateHiker I was talking about the Beechcraft plane the two gentlemen are standing in front of. They are very nice planes, fly well and have nice lines.
