An important lesson for theists and atheists alike.

We do not do good out of fear of hell or promise of heaven but simply because we want to do good. We need no God to tell us to be kind or compassionate or empathetic or to help the poor and heal the hurt.

We simply do it because we can.

In that, we should, all of us, theist and atheist alike, be held to this standard.

Excellent post, Lady. 🙂

I have had this same belief in helping others because it the right thing to do for a long time now. Fear of god never enters my mind. I actually helped an elderly stranger change her flat tire this morning.

I wouldn't be surprised if the guy who wrote that was secretly atheist. Xians are NOT that reasonable about non-believers.

Excellent post, full of meaning.

We do not look upon the world and it’s people and see beauty, majesty and love because we are trying to be good people. It is because our perception is correct and the world really is a gem of great value—and our fellow humans are LOGICALLY worthy of the utmost respect and love.

Try to get 'believers' to act as if there were no god ? What - and take personal responsibility for themselves & their actions ?
No way !
Without their 'higher power' to fall back on, they'd be like a rudderless boat...

When I help someone, I feel good inside. As I transitioned away from belief in God, I relied on that to prompt me to help others. I can't imagine helping someone just because. If some people do that, I would love to understand what they're doing. But for me, I do it for the personal reward of happiness.

It is interesting to consider the effects of hypothetically being able to disprove the existence of gods in a way that everyone would accept. I think, in general, that most people would still have a tendency to behave, though I’m not quite convinced that it would be 99.999% of us. I have had several people tell me that if there were no god, they would, in fact, live an aberrant and immoral lifestyle. If there were only, say 80% or the population that would behave in this case, the remaining 20% with anarchistic tendencies would likely be a huge problem. In this sense, it is almost a positive that the eradication of such beliefs is done slowly.

Humanist thoughts. You don't need God to be good.

It kind of worries me when a Theist exclaims... “If you don’t believe in God, then where do you get your moral compass from”? As if they would go out and rape and pillage without their belief system.

I had a coworker try to tell me that atheists have no sense of morality or right and wrong because it is all from God and I just looked at her and shook my head. "Really? So you believe I'm some horrible criminal person who murders and rapes people? That's what you think of me?"

"OH NOOOOO NOT YOUUUUU"

"WELL IM A FUCKING ATHEIST AND YOU JUST SAID ALL ATHEISTS HAVE NO SENSE OF MORALITY. SO OBVIOUSLY YOU DO."
