For starters parents do not get a divorce because of the kids. My kids asked me once if I divorced their mom because of them. That's how kids think.

Not all parental choices are overly burdensome for the child.
Other choices, like religion, I told my children to decide for themselves once they were old enough to do so. They chose none of them, but learned to respect their attempts to preach social morality, whilst rejecting their mythology. .
