I understand you, I also had a problem with authority in my youth but it definitely had nothing to do with my atheism. I am an atheist because I have common sense and I chose not to believe in unsustainable lies.

My non-belief in imaginary beings has nothing to do with authority, as I have never really had a problem with authority. When someone in a position of authority (a cop, boss, etc.) tells me to stop doing something within their jurisdiction, I stop. When I'm in someone else's house, I follow their rules.; in my own house I follow my rules. Granted there are people in positions of authority who shouldn't be, but that is a societal problem, not a religious one. People, including clergy, only have as much authority as we grant them.

Many of us are very deliberate with our decision to abandon religion. Here's what it took for me:

1. Actually reading the damn thing.
2. Noting all the errancy.
3. Reading scholarship about where the thing derived.
4. Finding out there are only copies of copies of copies of copies of biblical texts, with variations abounding.

Wow, way to trivialize what is, for most people, a truly life-changing decision. Turns out they just haven't outgrown juvenile rebellion..............
