Has anyone here been hypnotised, either by a stage hypnotist or clinically?
I was hypnotized by my medical doctor when I had my ears pierced. I remember hearing his voice, being calm, and watching him, but I felt nothing...I don't remember anything except "waking" up with earrings in my ears. I still think it was more about being relaxed and calm than anything.
I tried it to stop smoking a few years later but it didn't seem to work...
Once I saw a hypnotist — he’s actually a psychologist with a good reputation and he’s a good friend — to stop smoking. He did his routine on me but I didn’t go under. I told him so afterwards. He said “Yes you did.” I did the self-hypnosis he taught me while I was supposedly hypnotized. Didn’t work. At all. I stopped smoking later in my own. Cold turkey.
Nope. I refuse to be manipulated by charlatans.
I’ve seen it at shows but I simply can not allow myself to be controlled in that way. It is very fascinating though.
What is your experience in that regard?
I went to a clinical hypnotherapist once, just as an academic exercise for myself to see what happens. I started going under and everything started spinning like when you have had too much to drink and the room starts to revolve. I pulled myself out because I didn’t feel comfortable.
Apparently only 10% of the population are resistant to being hypnotised but it depends on one’s suggestibility to the degree that you can be influenced.
I am sure there are some psychologists here with better information/data than I.
@Geoffrey51 You and I can pride ourselves on being in the elite 10%.
