In the last Presidential election cycle, Trump used as a talking point the concept that immigrants (not refugees, which was a sudden and unpredicted crisis) from Syria were poorly vetted. That was exactly that, a political talking point, but in reality, a lie. Most of the people that had applied for immigration status had been on the waiting list for at least two years and have participated in at least six vetting interviews.
Overseas Immigration vetting normally takes a minimum of two years. Central America vetting has been been disrupted by the situation at the border.
Nothing in the Constitition about American citizens needing an ID to vote. So many conservatives clamber for original interpretation of the Constitution. No mention in the Constitution, therefore not appropriate to demand such. That's a voter suppression move.
Is it really that difficult to show a valid I.D to vote. Gotta carry a drivers license on our person to legally drive a car . Are drivers licenses a form of driving suppression?
@RobertMartin. In many inner city neighborhoods residents do not own cars, therefore never get a drivers license. They do not see the relevence in their world.
To get a federally registered ID can be expensive to someone living close to the edge (many in the inner city, and even in some rural communities). I used to date a lady when in college who took and made photo registrations. To you and I it doesnt seem expensive, but to someone who lives at the poverty level, that expense means a sacrifice elsewhere in their budget. It all means time away from work, another expense.
Couple that with a mistrust of all things official and related to the government. It has little to do with doing anything wrong, rather being the butt of legislation for generations. Most of these people lean politically towards the Democrats. So its in the Republicans advantage to support any policy that supresses their vote.
@t1nick what does voting Democrat or Republican have to do with the issue?
I recall 20 years ago I lost my license for 90 days. I went and paid $10 for a non expiratory state I.D. card. It was necessary so that I go out with friends, we go to a bar, I have I.D. when I get carded. Same thing going to the store and buying beer, I have an I.D. to allow me to purchase alcohol. After the 90 days, I went and got my license reinstated.
No background checks at gun shows. I know a lot of felons who own guns. It is against the law, but hey you believe what you want.
Apparently no background checks at gun shows is a loophole that needs to be closed up.
@RobertMartin that was my point.
Voter ID is a B.S. issue being used to disenfranchise POC. Make it easier for CITIZENS to get the legal identification then, fine. Don't pass a law then close ID centers or move them 30 miles away from folks who don't drive. And both of those things have happened.
And, immigration, where to start???? Overhaul HB1 and student visas and hold companies and schools responsible. UNDERSTAND that the thousands of so called illegal immigrants arriving at the LEGAL ports of entry - aren't illegal. The US is a signatory of the world laws that allows people to show up and ask - and yes, we can say no. So, don't confuse illegal immigrants with those arriving legally now and seeking asylum (many from countries that we helped f' up).
And, just for good measure, the wall: remember that walls keep people in as well as out (They actually do neither well) however, the stricter enforcement of border security in 94 stopped many migrants who would come and leave and so, they just stayed.
Don't we all need a valid I.D. to purchase alcohol? Don't we all need a valid I.D. to get a job?
I see no problem whatsoever with presenting a valid I.D to vote, ie. Driver's license, state issued identification card, ect.
@RobertMartin I wasn't arguing the law - read it sometime. The truth though is almost no illegal voting goes in AND certain states have used it to disenfranchise by making it hard to get identification. Do you deny that? Fact check it. Make getting the ID available for all citizens then.
