It really does remind me of a type of parenting style that was once popular and rarely challenged until the 1960's. It features emotional manipulation and an authoritarian focus on obedience. Also a type of dog training style, now that I think of it.

Religion itself, and many religions, depend on fear, and fear depends on a punishment being promised to those who disobey.
