I remember being so happy that I'd been 'saved'. Calling that feeling a delusion seems very harsh. I guess I am just 'soft'...
I don't think the feelign is a delusion so much as it is misinterpreted. Most people feel a need to belogn to a group. From an evolutionary standpoint belongign to groups was a survival strategy. Peopel generally feel safer and a better sense of well being when they belogn to a group, because that feelign is a paret of our animal instincts which have evolve3d over hundreds of thousands of years.
The feeling of being "saved" is nto unique to any religion, but pretty much all of them experience it in some way. It is interestign that they use the word "saved" as beign a part of a group makes a person feel instincually "safe".
The feeling is your acceptance of the group and their acceptance of you. It seels wonderful because beign a part of a group means "safety", and to be accepted into a group releases a sense of joy.
When you are dealign with our animal instincts which have evolved over hundredsw of thousands of years if not millions of years, it is hard to properly interpret them in terms of modern civilization which is less than 6,000 years old.
One of the many reasons why religion rejets evolution and science is that the miraculous and wonder can be put into context and explained and church officials know that people realize they don't need religion (or rather won't need church leaders) to guide them or have power over them.
I think I have read about research showing there is a part of the brain that is triggered by religious 'belonging' and results in feelings of euphoria and joy.....bran scans show that it exists. Maybe some people remain religious because they access this function and depend on it.
I remember "being saved." It was a religious high that was as great as any drug. You could be happy and drunk at the same time. Oh, so wonderful.
Today I ask "saved from what?" The answer is that you are saved from what god was going to do to you if you did not believe in him and go along with him. This means that god was the problem all along.
