When Claire was a baby, I got a plastic, hand-crank food grinder. Cooked our vegetables and fruit softer for her and never bought processed baby food.

Claire loved vegetables! She called broccoli "Trees."

When she was two, Claire got bored with our table conversation and shoved broccoli up her nose. While changing her diaper, I noticed something green in her nostrils.

"Terry, will you bring me the flashlight?" Couldn't get it out with tweezers. Called the pediatrician. "Bring her right in," he said.

"How soft is it cooked?" the pediatrician asked. "I haven't had dinner."

He brought out the world's smallest vacuum cleaner. While Terry and I held squalling Claire down, he removed three, 1/2"- long broccoli pieces.

Terry called Claire "Broccoli Nose" until I told him to knock it off. "Don't encourage her."
