Does anyone get this Betsy Ross flag banning? Look slavery was a terrible thing. Jim Crow laws were a terrible thing. Sure, no question. But, Nike says the only reason that they are banning the Betsy Ross flag is not because it has anything to do with slavery, but because the flag EXISTED in an era of American history in which slavery also existed. Well, slavery existed until the 13th Amendment in 1865. Jim Crow laws existed until they were outlawed by the Civil Rights Act of 1965. So, do we therefore ban representing anything that existed before those dates simply because their existence may remind us of an era in which slavery or Jim Crow laws existed?

Or is this simply a matter of whatever Kaepernick says, Nike does?

White Supremacy groups have co-opted the flag as one of their symbols. That is the reason for Nike's decision.

OK, I get that, and it probably makes sense from a marketing standpoint for Nike to drop it than to fight the complaints in that case. But what do we do once White Supremacy groups co-op our current flag? Wait a minute...they already HAVE co-oped our current flag. They fly our current flag all the time!

Also, Obama flew the Betsy Ross flag during his Inauguration. Haven't hear any complaints about that.

@Heraclitus

I think the controversies that have come about as a consequence of this Administration has brought it into the lime light. I do not think as many were aware during Obama as most of the hate groups were operating more underground. Their recent empowerment has brought light and attention to the things that they choose to co-opt and thevextrnt if their influence.

FYI slavery has been around since man has been around ... the first slaves in North America were Native Americans, the second were white Europeans and then came Black Africans. That is a lot of flags before coming to Betsy's flag.

Slavery still exists in its purest form and also: economic and sexist forms. 200 million or more slaves in the world according to the Anti Slavery association.

@Beowulfsfriend and the 200 million are just the Americans ... lol
