US Women Soccer vs. US Men Soccer

I was thinking about this over lunch. It's really hard to believe that the US Women Soccer team is so good, they win the World Cup almost every single time, and the US Men Soccer team is so bad they often don't even qualify for the World Cup. I think the most likely explanation is that there is so much money to be made in the USA for men playing basketball, baseball, and football, that the majority of the most gifted athletes gravitate to those sports.

Any other theories?

Any other examples from other countries or sports where the women are so good and the men are so bad, or vice versa?

The men's team isn't bad. It is often top 10 in the world. By world standards it isn't great, or good enough to win the gold events. Soccer has historically not been a US sport, so to speak. Elite male athletes in the states make more money elsewhere like football (number 12 sport in the world). Thus, many athletes here go into other sports hoping for an elusive payday.
With a lack of popular women's sports world-wide and in the US, soccer has risen, especially here. The best female athletes in the US are now funneled toward soccer (Or basketball, softball is suffering, but no one cares since the Olympics dropped it).

I agree 100%
