Modern "progressive Christianity" is nothing like "genuine Christianity" with the witch burnings and "holy wars" and educational suppression. This is partially a product of increased literacy as the evil in the Bible is really only effective when the majority of its adherents can't read and hence can be bred to be pure ignorant feral dogs. Normal humans gravitate towards non-psychopathy so they are attracted to the gospel teachings which spawns "progressive Christians."

However, none of them speak for the "King of Israel" any more than they speak for "The Chief Justice of the United States" so it's a moot point. And that's 2500 years of human history summed up in a sentence.

Christians are not a monolith. Many -- on a worlwide basis, actually most, anywhere from 66% to 87% depending on whose numbers you use -- are NOT evangelicals, and not 100% of those are conservative fundamentalists. This is hard to keep in focus when you live in America, and triply so if you live in the Bible Belt. But it's true. And what this guy is doing, is speaking to that US fundamentalist bunch that pushes American exceptionalism, which has infected even non-religious people in this country. It is a form of toxic nationalism, and is and always has been fascistic.
