I have been waking up depressed for the past two weeks. However once I get up and moving I'm fine. I am currently on medication for depression and I can happily say that it is helping me. I just don't understand why I wake up each morning with extreme sadness. While these episodes of depression are short lived they are very real and I feel so much despair and hopelessness in the first thirty or forty minutes of initially being awake. Would any of you folks on here know what could be causing it?

Our minds work based on chemical factors . . . sounds like you should tell your doctor what is happening. I am kind of the opposite, when I go to bed, I am like "Fuck, is all this really worth it?" but I know when I wake up I will be ready to go at it again. Dreams seem to assist . . . . maybe the medication you are taking is interfering with your ability to dream.

The meds wear off over night. In the morning you are at the lowest energy level. If you have depression (I have had it since I was little), there has to be some motivation to get you up and at it. For me, it's been my children - getting them ready for school; and my students - preparing for lessons, getting them motivated, planning concerts, etc. I too am taking medication and it helps, a lot!

My point is: having something to motivate you to get going is super important.

I have the same problem. I wake up pissed or depressed. But I know it will pass after an hour or so.

Maybe you need a sleep apnea evaluation...and/or a blood test for diabetes.
