This can cover several areas so I will go with the most obvious. Several years ago I read that, worldwide, 2 to 3 times more women underwent sterilization surgery as men. We all know it is much more difficult for women to get sterilized then men and it made me angry and ashamed. I immediately went and got 'fixed' (an interesting story - my doctor was named Dr. Wonderly). What is it about men that makes us so irresponsible and cowardly. Later I attended a lecture on native American practices and learned that some tribes, after 2 kids, would perform self vasectomies using rose thorns! Looking into this I discovered the situation is even worse than I thought. Some countries (a California prison forced sterilization on women inmates - "at least 148 women at the California Institution for Women in Corona and Valley State Prison for Women in Chowchilla received tubal ligation..." - and many countries either force the procedure on women or give incentives for women to get the procedure.
It falls in to the same reasoning as to why women are more expected to be on some form of birth control than men are expected to make sure they have a condom. It's ridiculous and nonsensical and a direct symptom of a toxic level of patriarchy still pervasive in modern society.
I had a vasectomy at 27. Right after my son was born. 3 children is an odd but good number. My wifes never had to take a pill or forget to take a pill. Good sense to be the one to get cut.
Why are you getting ashamed for others' deeds or misdeeds? Is it not the couples' choice in the end and how they arrive at that choice is their prerogative?
I was ashamed for MY lack of choice and the inherent paternalism of my gender. My partner and I did not want to have children then or ever. It would have been an easy solution and I did not follow through. We did both take precautions, though but it was messy and inconvenient for us.
You took precautions, why be ashamed that you did? Use a condom, have the snip, (I'll leave out castrations physical or chemical but it is an option). You had a choice, If you could explain inherent paternalism of your gender please. Women have options too. Your partner made a choice. You did your bit.
The world is dominated by men, run by men, Lawmakers are mostly men that is why. Women are still treated as second class citizen, and in some countries they still do not have basic human rights, and are still considered properties of the men in their families.
Many men seem to think it will affect their libido. It doesn't, both of my husbands were smart enough to have it done. Thank you for doing the right thing. Perhaps your ability for logical thinking took away the fear of the procedure. I know man that need it done but never find the money. It is sad that there are many avenues for access to low-cost birth control measures but none for vasectomies.
It was socially acceptable for women to accept the responsibility for being fertile as well as going through the surgery for sterilization. It is amazing that even today women are expected and in some cases forced to be sterilized and the government still give women a hard time about abortion.
I think it’s still the norm. Some Pharma company tried to do a clinical trial for a men’s version of “the pill” and had to scrap the trial cause they got symptoms that made them drop out. All symptoms women are used to as a part of being a woman. Add to that what woman with half a brain would trust a man saying “don’t worry I’m on the pill”?
Don’t worry I know women have a history of entrapment with respect to birth control sabotage but I would NEVER hand over that responsibility to a man.
You are so right. Years ago a friend told me a story about a man who switched out his wife's birth control to force her to give up her corporate job that required her to travel and get a lower paying job closer to home. My friend was convinced the husband was jealous not only of her travel but of her income too.
Even though there are some women who trap men, there are men who are devious too.
There is an amazing series on You Tube called Victorian Farms (and Edwardian Farms, and Feudal Farms and War-time Farms). In this series there are 3 actors 2 male anthropologists and 1 female Historian, Ruth. One scene shows Ruth cleaning pig intestines and preparing them for condoms. It was the woman's job then to do this for men (it was not said how they got the men to use them).
