Some people think that the typical image of Christ that we have today was originally modeled on Cesare Borgia. The evidence is thin but certainly the image of Christ we have today first became popular at the right time. The odd one or two before, among many different ones could just be coincidence.
I sometimes wonder though if the early Italian artists were having a joke, when they made the son of god look like the son of the pope, and picked a moral monster for the role.
The artists were probably just sucking up to the pope, the Borgias, and all of their rich connections.
