What effect will impeachment proceedings have on the 2020 elections? Will they serve to rally the Trump supporters? Will they energize the Democrats? Will they cause so much distraction that the other issues get minimized?

Yes no yes....if trial begins in Senate, Democrats crimes will be constantly be cited making TrumpOLINI look like a crusader cleaning up USA....Democrats will run for the hills condemning Biden and Schiff and that list will get very long....then maybe 30 Democrats will vote to convict TrumpOLINI and 70 Senators will send him back to work 44 states will re-elect this incompetent creep orange hair pussy grabber not just 31 three years ago if voters don't rally behind @HowieHawkins20 to be a real peace and green jobs President

You think the impeachment proceedings will drag on that long?

No. But I do think that while impeachment is possible, removal from office is not (which is fine because I sure as heck do not want Pence in office) and there will be lingering emotional effects.

Actually, thinking about it more, Trump could manage to drag things out forever. He is good at that. Already Guiliani has been talking about suing for whatever.

A recent poll resulted in a tie, 43% for and against impeachment. That leaves 14% on the fence. However, the previous poll had far fewer people in favor of impeachment than against; if this trend continues and even more people switch to support impeachment, then the effect on the election should favor Dems. Pelosi seems to be afraid of impeachment being an adverse impact. There are so many other issup, it's hard to imagine it will have a major effect.

It may have zero effect, so what would be the point other than to get it on record.

@itsmedammit Oh, it will have some effect, and I'm in favor of his impeachment, at least for the record. IMO he and his political appointees should go to prison for life.

The trump supporters are always riled up. It may keep trump so distracted he won't do anything. That would be fine with me. The House has passed some 150 bills that McConnell won't bring to the floor. You can't stop something that isn't moving.

McConnell is a trip. Just recently he said the senate would follow the rules should an impeachment occur. Easy to say since the senate will of course vote, and their vote will be to not convict, given the Republican majority. Personally I don't want him removed before election anyway as I'd hate to see Pence as president.

@itsmedammit It wouldn't matter. He would be a lame duck President with even less power than trump. He probably wouldn't even get his parties nomination for 2020. Of course if that happened, who knows who they would nominate. It would be interesting and a little scary.

@Sticks48 I hadn't thought about the lame duck notion. Let's hope that is the case.

@itsmedammit He would not have much time left and would still have to deal with the Dems controlling the House. I don't believe he could whip the base into a frenzy like trump can.

I doubt this issue will keep going this strong, for months. Just between now and the end of the year, we're likely dealing with more federal budget issues. Next year insurance goes up, raises don't, and more "unusual weather patterns" occur. Plus foreign policy.

Lol at unusual weather patterns. I think it could serve as a distraction if Trump manages to somehow drag it out. If senate moves to convict (which we can be pretty certain is not going to happen) I can see Trump attempting to appeal or sue or something.

Depends on how the proccess unfolds, what it uncovers, and what the final outcome actually is.

What'd be awesome is if Trump is impeached, Pence takes over as pres, and Trump runs again (not against the law). That'd fracture up the Republican party sufficiently so my goldendoodle could be elected both president of the U.S. and local dog catcher - despite him not being 35 years old for pres and the inherent conflict of interest in electing a dog as dog catcher.

Lol, I don't think the senate will remove Trump from office, and I really wouldn't want Pence in there.

@itsmedammit Senate probably won't remove him unless the articles the house brings are iron clad - which Pelosi knows, so we'll see.

Pence at this stage doesnt scare me nearly as much as Trump. Pence wasn't actually elected pres and wouldn't have anything he could call a mandate or direction. Hed be ineffective and tainted coming from this administration with elections looming.

@1of5 IMO he might be seen as a more legitimate president and be poised for reelection with his strong "Christian" ideals. We'll see.

@itsmedammit I don't think that'll happen, he was brought on to bring the Christian ideals to the ticket to show a strong connection between trumps conservatism and xtian conservatism to the base (which worked), but I think that support plateaued awhile ago. With trumps supposed "business acumen" off the ticket Pence us just another extreme right wing conservative Christian that most folks can't stomach.

At least I hope, anyways.

it doesnt matter, this step must be taken

Even if there will be no conviction?

@itsmedammit yes
