Do you have a favorite science fiction movie? I saw and enjoyed Ad Astra tonight. The father/son story line reminded me a bit of the second TRON movie. I loved 2001 A Space Odyssee, of course. Gravity was cool, as was the first Jurassic Park. Core--in spite of its absurd pseudo-science--is a lot of fun. My favorite, though, is Contact. How about you?

All great choices. I'm going to add a couple of movies that aren't usually considered Sci-Fi: On The Beach (1959), Fail-Safe (1964).

No interest in SF ... apart from Jane Fonda in whatever that ridiculous film was

So many good ones mentioned. My all time favorite is the original 1982 Blade Runner.

So many good choices. I can't really choose just one. If forced I would say Metropolis for its early foray into the genre and how well it was done. Maybe do a decade by decade list, because the 1950's gave us the phenomenal Day the Earth Stood Still.

I liked "Silent Running " with Bruce Dern . National Parks in space . Brazil is another one of my favorites .

The all time BEST Sci-Fi movie is.............

The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951 version) with Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal. If you have NOT seen it... You must the next time it comes on as it will be YOUR new favorite, guaranteed!

Runner up - Forbidden Planet

Definitely up there in the top.

Metropolis, because it's still superb after 92 years; THX1138; Paprika; District 9; Alien (though some argue it's really gothic horror rather than sci-fi).

All excellent choices.

I adore Paprika - actually, all of Satoshi Kon's films.

@Lauren Always a pleasure to hear someone else liked it - it was criminally overlooked in the UK!

@Jnei Pretty overlooked in the US as well, except perhaps in cult circles. I think I might revisit it again tonight.

I'd just read that Metropolis has been colorized. Will you check it out, or are you a purist about that?

@Lauren I'll see it should the chance to do present itself, but I won't seek it out.

Not a genre I am particularly enamoured with.
