Yoko Ono, wrote the album from which this came in six days at the age of 76. What've you done lately?
AllMusic called her “one of the most gloriously influential and notorious women in the history of rock.” She's likely the most reviled non-political public figure ever. No one has ever endured more ire and condemnation for so little. Forever known as the Dragon Lady and Beatle-killer. Her childhood was ruled by upheaval and racism–moved to the U.S. from Japan before WWII where she was hated; returned to Japan, tainted by the American experience, and was hated. Her very life has been an act of resistance.
Her art was confrontational but joyful too. Her music was often difficult, her vocals pitchy, her words often treacly and a wee patronizing at times in that heavy-handed, drug store greeting card way. Though she’s had her moments including a few great ones. And, being with John Lennon and loving him couldn't've been easy.
I always root for her.
She's certainly an acquired taste. I was never a fan of her artistic work, but I always admired her as an activist, and I never believed all the crap that was thrown at her, including the accusation that she broke up the Beatles.
I have been a professional musician for over 45 years. I have never heard one player or one singer say Yoko was the tiniest bit influential in the world of music. I have never heard anyone mention her name. She can't sing and she can't write. If she had not married Lennon, no one would have known who she was. I do agree she did not cause the breakup of the Beatles.
@Deiter Because she has no discernible musical talent that I have ever seen. I know she was part of an avant-garde art scene, but it is a very small audience that pays any attention to that scene. If you admire her that is fine, but to try and make her something she isn't is something else.
As a professional musician and lyricist, I don't think she worked too hard on the words for this song! The music is hard-driven and energetic, but how much did her band have to do with that? I am working on an album too, but it's going to take a lot more thought than seven days can bring. Incidentally, Handel wrote Messiah in just over three weeks. Yoko Ono's album is not 1/3 that good, or anywhere near it, IMO.
