Although a controversial writer and thinker his honesty must have been refreshing.

Imagine now he would be shut down everywhere with howls of discontent by the over-privileged PC brigade.

I had not heard that pragmatism is the opposite of romanticism. Romanticism was against the Age of Enlightenment, because the proponents exaggerated reason, so much that it became unreasonable. They valued 'MAN' (leaving out women) as opposed to nature and emotion, which were valued by Romanticism.
I'm about half and half reason and nature.
There are reasons for each, but there should be balance, not conflict between reason and nature.

H. L. Mencken was a great man but a pragmatic man can also try to change it. Pragmatic relates to understanding a situation, not necessarily what action he would take. I believe being pragmatic is better because being romantic often leads to living in a La La land and not working in the right direction. A romantic man would most likely not be in touch with the reality.
