I hate the “Karl Marx was racist so we shouldn’t use Marxist methodology”. King James II was racist but you read his Bible. Adam Smith was racist but you admire capitalism. Malthus praised plantations but B schools still teach his growth models.

I don't care if Marx was racist, I just don't agree with him.

Your opinion.

It is silly to chastise historical characters and methods. Slavery brought wealth which forged the Modern world. Child labour had always been a part of the social fabric. Female domesticity fuelled the Industrial Revolution.

Now, in more ‘enlightened’ times we can refer back to these periods, but not relive them. We can challenge them as they arise because the benefit of hindsight gives us an informed position.

Whether we address the issues raises another set of questions.

Theist will always try to discredit anything that challenges their belief systems

Period.

No one is all right or all wrong. We have the benefit of historical perspective to choose what has proven to be most fair and helpful.

One of the favorites of theists is to say that Darwin was racist. The best response is to point out that while Darwin was mildly racist, speaking of lesser races, Jesus was very racist, speaking of other races as no better than dogs.

Exactly that.

Quite agree. Marx is one of the greats of sociology along with Durkheim and Weber..

Not possible to ignore his work if you want to understand he dynamics and outcomes of the Industrial Revolution.

Good point. Racism has been almost totally pervasive so that it makes little sense to judge and demonize historical figures. It makes no sense to judge and demonize period!

The only thing that makes sense to me is to move forward as best we can with a spirit of mutual love and respect.

Exactly, many methodologies we admire today and use were made by ignorant men, that doesn’t make it any less right.
