Life on other worlds is possible as we exist. In a universe so large and complex, it’s a statistical probability. Worlds could have existed millions of years ago and have since disappeared. One day our world and culture will cease to exist and disappear. The universe will go one. We are just a spec of dust in the timeline of our universe.
Up until the time of Galileo it was generally believed that the earth was the centre of the known universe and that the sun revolved around the earth. Aristrachus of Samos put forward the idea that the earth revolved around the sun although he said that both were the centre of the universe.
Given that we live on an outer spiral arm of a minor galaxy and that there are billions of galaxies it seems to me that it is unlikely that we are the only life forms in the universe. Such a thought would be akin to a primitive tribe who are living on an island with no means of exploring beyond it and therefore conclude that they are only life forms.
the universe that you seem to think is all around you is actually created inside your mind. maybe you should rethink your philosophy.
@desertastronomer not sure how that violates any ideas of free thinking. it's just a fact.
That is just soooo...stupid.
@desertastronomer what's the extraordinary fact? this is accepted science. I think you need to read more biology and physiology and psychology. Just because you don't understand it doesn't make it extraordinary.
@desertastronomer nope. I said that the reality of what is outside our minds doesn't match with our senses. maybe you need some reading comprehension classes?
@desertastronomer you guys get into these morose, depressive moods when you havent even explored all the options available to you in the world. it's like Dr. Strange's denials to Tilda Swinton in the movie. you're standing in pitch black darkness oblivious to things around you yet still declaring nothing is there. LEARN!
...and so says every 14-year-old after their first joint.
@desertastronomer I'm not quite sure what your point is.
@desertastronomer Yes, as does anyone with a scientific education as it's far from original, ground-breaking thought. You miss my point. And again. Yes.
I was older and sober, but I did eventually realize that "my" idea was far from original.
