They are back. For a long time I have not had a visit from the JW banging on the door. I understood that they had stopped doing it in the UK on health and safety grounds. But yesterday, perfectly on the day after Halloween, like the monsters in a horror movie, who suddenly pops back just when you thought it was all over, a pair called.
The older man introduced himself and a really sad looking ten/twelve year old, who he said was his nephew. I felt so sorry for the kid, being dragged round door to door like that, in what little spare time children get from schooling these days, what a way to start out in life.
Then they gave me this really tacky leaflet on the cheapest possible paper, which quotes some cherry picked bible verses, and left. The older one asked if I would think about the bible verses, so I nodded, but all I could think about was that poor kid.

And the families out taking their whole zoo for a walk. Miss that.
That’s interesting because yesterday there was a whole load of them on the estate where my daughters live. I don’t think I have seen them en masse since I have been in Australia which is nearly 13 years.
Must have been a global directive!

They do follow orders. Though I don't know if the orders come from on high or down under.
My house is very UNwelcoming.
There is a 2' retaining wall around the front which makes the yard taller. On that wall is a 5' picket fence. 5' hight inside, 7' hight outside.
There is NO gate on the street. Gate is up the driveway near the house. At the (self closing) gate is a white porcelain sign that says "Dog In Yard" ...
Not even the most harded or naive politician or religious venture in. Occasionally I find pamphlets near the gate but mostly at the street where there is no entrance.
Even UPS and FedEx do not venture in. Packages are left in the driveway.
I had NO trick-or-treaters ventured in this year. They walked by but none made the trek up the drive to the gate, inside the yard, and to the door.
On the rare occasion someone does make it to my front door, they are greated with NO doorbell. When I manage to hear a knock I do not open the door unless I am expecting someone.
I guess that history class in college on ancient fortifications was useful after all.
