While I think he makes some excellent points - note that religious communities can also fill the void he mentions. They can be seen as providing a community and a sense of belonging. This may be one of their main appeals. When I attended church as a teenager, this was one thing they did. I liked playing basketball but was not very good. Our church was part of a league and there were no tryouts so anyone could play. We need to find an alternative to building a clear sense of community without religion.

If someone could sell you a route to happiness, then they would only get to sell it to you once. However if they can make you unhappy and persuade you to buy a fake cure, then they can sell you that over and over again.
