have you noticed? that unlike just about every other species, it's the male who displays his health, excellence and flair whereas with homo sapiens it's the woman who dresses up and displays in various ways rather more ostentatiously than men.

why might this be?

I think the displays of health and flair and "good genes" are ubiquitous in male animals. The "look at me" behavior of human females is unusual. I think the key to sucess of the human species (not individuals, but group or social level) is our high level of variability, that allows us as a species, to adapt to any situation. "It takes all types". We acheive this variability by high levels of social cross breeding and promiscuity. Women normally arent afforded the option to have childeren with various mates while maintaining a stable family structure (ie cuckolding), but the need for sperm competition is still there. Women advertise for mates just like men.

Back in early France, pink was worn by both men and women but now, it's almost exclusively worn by females..

No other species wear clothes or use makeup, not even the ones that have hands. Males in many species fight for females, which is competition. Both sexes of humans compete for mates, is there another species in which both sexes compete for mates?

Here is one :

@FearlessFly Thanks, but is there a species, other than humans, in which both species compete.

The Wadaabe tribe men wear makeup to attract women.

@EdEarl . . . this one seems to think so :

@FearlessFly in the case of these fish, it's the fathers who provide care, a crucial factor.

@FearlessFly and in the abstract of the article about mammals, i read "Because female adaptations for intrasexual competition are often less conspicuous than those of males" indicating less display among females.

If you look back in history there have been plenty of cultures where the men dressed in bright shiny outfits and wigs. Of course they were the wealthy not the common man. In this country everyone toned down. They were pretty much living in a wilderness. Maybe religion had some influence on more conservative fashion. But boy in the 20th Century you ladies came busting out to the delight of us mens. And all of that could just be bullshit! 🙂
