If Trump had demanded the assassination of (political rival) Joe Biden instead of an investigation, would the Republicans still be making the same lame arguments? I think everyone understands that the sub-context of the investigation was character assassination of his political rival.

Yes. Also that simply asking for a thing to be done by a foreign ruler is so entirely wrong... I am really tired of the 'but it didn't happen' argument.
If someone asked an assassin to commit murder and it didn't happen? It's still a crime!
