I just recently sang with a large chorus and orchestra, we did the much loved "Messiah". I've sung it a gazillion times, and have always loved the MUSIC !

A friend, who knows me fairly well, asked how could I sing such a piece if I wasn't a believer ?

I told her, I needn't believe in the story, to love the music. Handel rocks ! To me it's no different than having a favorite nursery rhyme put to a tune !

Do any of you still enjoy liturgical music of some kind - even though the word content may be ridiculous ?

I sing religious music all the time...I too am a choral singer. Handel’s Messiah is always an exhilarating piece to sing...as are many others. The words only have meaning if you believe them...but the beauty of the music transcends any words.

Same as loving some R Kelly songs or M Jackson without you condoning pedophiles.

Some beautiful music has been written in the name of religion. As has some beautiful art work, architecture and stories. If you enjoy the music, sing! You don’t have to believe the words.
