A path to whittling away religious power... ban the indoctrination of children to the concept of "Hell" as child abuse.

One of my biggest objections to religious indoctrination of children is the abusive threat that the concept of Hell is a real thing that bad children and adults will be tortured in Hell forever. This is so heinous that I just can't understand why it's still tolerated in our society.

I watched a program on PBS once where they interviewed child about their knowledge of religion including Hell and it was mortifying! Several children cried because they worried not only they might go to Hell but that their loved ones might. One little girl had tears in her eyes because she said she was already going to Hell. When the interviewer asked her why she thought that, what could she possibly have done to be sent to Hell, she said because she was a girl and all girls were sinners because of Eve. I broke down and cried, myself. Then I was outraged.

How dare these people terrorize children in such a way. I would love to see the banning of teaching the Hell concept to children. A first step to banning childhood indoctrination.

Ignorance begets fear.

"I just can't understand why it's still tolerated in our society."

If someone else punishes the child (that guilt/hell thing) then YOU aren't the one meting it out. The nefarious "god" is doing that, whilst being all loving and all that shit.

YOU therefore aren't the person hurting another, which absolves you of responsibility. Added to that, the judgmental nature of religion in the hands of a god who shunts one off to hell forever makes perfect sense. It isn't YOU being judgmental--it's that damned god again.

You are going to ban someone sharing their beliefs with their kids? Okay, ban racism. It should be banned but how do you do it? You can ban racist acts and you can ban public hate speech but only education even begins to lessen it, because you can't control what parents teach their kids. It interferes with a couple parts of the first amendment and you could end up not being able to teach your kids not to torture animals, or that the earth is flat, if that amendment is interfered with. Slippery slope and all that, also akin to banning baggy pants or rap music or everyone who ever shopped at Walmart and dressed for that activity. Try another way to eliminate hell. Banning what a parent may teach a kid is not it.

@NoPlanetB For teaching them about drug use? No. For offering them drugs. That is different. We do not ban parents for teaching things unless they are also breaking the law with action. Child porn is illegal. I don't know about showing them adult porn -- it is obviously wrong -- but it is an activity and that is different from speech. We also have freedom of religi9n, including freedom of the parts of religion you like least. That is what theoretically guarantees us freedom FROM religion.

@NoPlanetB Parents are not banned from teaching their kids about sex. ... It may seem that way because far too many parents don't teach their kids anything about it, but that again, is the fault of religion.

@NoPlanetB I reread and there is that pesky about in the very next sentence with regard to drugs and other stuff.

@NoPlanetB "slope bs. We ban parents from exposing kids to porn or teaching them to have sex. I've seen pare..." Parents are not banned from teaching their kids to have sex. In fact, I believe it's the only place children should learn it. Better than from the internet or "their friends" who are just as clueless.

@NoPlanetB Aww I want to argue? As in how dare I disagree with you? Never mind. I'll go converse with someone who actually cares what others think.

@NoPlanetB i am also put off by how some people interact with others, especially when they dismiss an actual concern as nitpicking. you claimed you did not say about. you did. i pointed it out. calling you out on your inaccuracy is not nitpicking. meanwhile i stand by everything i have said here.

@NoPlanetB I don't know what country you live in, but okay. Also, I do wonder what your "sense of word" really is. If I were to say I'm teaching my friend "how to cook" or "about cooking" what is the difference? "Children" are those who are not yet 18, and the word "teens" includes those who are 13 through 19., those under 18 are still children. "DHS" typically handles social services for adults and those over 18 deemed minors, CPS - Child Protective Services manages children. I'm beginning to think your "sense of a word" is different than most, or that you are being too broad in your writings and use of words that your intention is unclear and there is much misunderstanding on both sides.

@NoPlanetB I would love it if parents couldn't teach any religion to a child, but that's not the world we live in. What if you were not allowed to NOT teach them religion? We can only hope that when the child gets older they will make their own choice. By the way, I see that you are Canadian and that may be where there is some confusion with Americans. However, saying "teaching children how to have sex " and "to have sex" is such a weird way of saying... I don't even know what. I've never heard of anyone needing to be taught to or told "to have sex." Young people will discover sex on their own most often with no conversations about sex at all. They should be instructed to some degree. Whatever you are saying seems to be lost in translation.

@NoPlanetB Oh, forgive me, I think I got two different posts from two different people confused. The Canadian is ...someone else and now, I can't find their comments. So sorry to add confusion!

@NoPlanetB Why do you say that?

@NoPlanetB That's funny, I feel the same way about myself. I traveled quite a bit when young, but no more. I hate long car rides and long plane trips even more! ... Perhaps you should visit Texas? It's only one state away, lol.
