A family member of mine is now into Hinduism. I have been an atheist since I was 15. Stephen Hawking was a big inspiration to me, along with George Carlin and Richard Dawkins. I do not have any interest entertaining the idea that there are invisible gods. I just listen to her and ask questions. I have already told her that every religion is man made and that I do not believe in any of it. I have read that Hinduism isn't as harmful/bad though, compared to other religions. Is this true? What do you know about Hinduism?

I was a Hindu for 23 years of my life. I agree that it is relatively a peaceful culture, of course except for outliers (extremists), but ultimately is about believing in some kind of god(s). Such a belief has potential to be harmful irrespective of the name of the religion

Is she trying to recruit you or is she simply sharing to you for the sake of talking to someone she confides in, maybe there are other reasons. I get it i so get it about anger at religion. The initials of Belief System are BS. it's my idea though that everyone who has one isn't necessarily out to convert people. Maybe there's an agenda maybe there isn't Have you talked this over with her?

Every religion is peaceful if it is so small that there is no chance to take power OR if is so big that no other can question its power.
If there are 2 or more competing religions all goes to hell.
The only region where this happens with Hinduism is on the north of Indian sub-continent.
Here is a sumarry, enjoy [en.wikipedia.org]

I must emphasize here that Hinduism is not a religion. It is way of life. You can still be a Hindu even if you do not believe in God, unlike other religions in which you have believe in God who established that particular religion. So you can join Hinduism and still be non-believer.

@subodhnana fool yourself with those thoughts. I though that too when I was a Hindu. Way of Life Bollocks!!! convenient phrases. Why call yourself a Hindu if it is just a way of life. ...just call yourself a human being then. all these "walks in life" and "ways of life" all laughable really. you still have gatherings and offerings and blessings and sacrifices and rituals and so on.
Would you call yourself a Hindu if you washed your feet by the river and went home?

This is not true. This is a face Hindu supporters put on Hinduism to make it look palatable, attractive but by all measures, Hinduism is a religion, a horrific one, primitive, full of mandates and restrictions. If you want to test this, just go to any place in India and ask a police question.... Why Krishna had 16,000 wives? Just tell them... I follow Hinduism but I am not a Hindu... lol..... You will not come back alive. One of the mandates is you will not insult a God (no matter how true). If this argument is true, you can be Christian without believing in Christ, you can be a Muslim just by following beautiful principles in Quran. Quran is beautifully written in most areas of principles of an orderly society.

Well, you have this caste system directly related to hinduism, and that sounds pretty bad to me. It's great if you are in the top caste, but really shitty if you are in the untouchable caste. Kind of like capitalism, but with different fables. If you think it's not as harmful as other religions, ask someone at the bottom of the heap what he or she thinks of that claim.
