Some of the founding fathers were deists.
To not be a Christian was "frowned-upon" and could be hazardous.

All these guys were Masons as well, and part of being a Mason is that you have to say you believe in "a higher power" of some indeterminate sort.

All together it is believed that about nine of the fifty-six men that signed the Declaration of Independence were masons, and about thirteen of the thirty-nine that signed the US Constitutions were also masons.
