"God helps those that help themselves". This phrase is disturbing, as it emphasizes that those who cannot help themselves and those that help others are unworthy of God.

We can go back to at least Sophocles, Euripides and Ovid for these sentiments.

Probably a proverb from the oral tradition.

So what does this sentiment mean to you?

@Melmoth Nothing at all. If you get on with doing what you need to do it gets done. If you don’t the pixies won’t do it!.

@Geoffrey51 So, in reality, you agree with the sentiment!

@Melmoth God’s got nothing to do with it.

@Geoffrey51 Apart from the God part!

@Melmoth God or gods doesn’t have any input in my life so god is irrelevant to me.

It may be relevant to others but I can’t comment on that.

The problem verb could be seen as disempowering but I see it more of an encouragement if you believe in such forces; work with something and the something will work with you!

Bullshit covering for non existence

It seems more sinister than simply BS!

I always just took it to mean “god isn’t doing shit so you better do it yourself.”

1

That explains the rich who help themselves to anything they want.

2

Handy excuse for the selfish among us.

Most of their shit makes no sense, this is why we are here. 🙂

It smacks of Mother Nature’s law ‘survival of the fittest ‘

MY Grandfather used to say
"God helps them that helps themselves," but always added "And god help them I catch helping themselves in my house."
