I’ve read that astronomer Arthur Eddington a century ago imagined, emphasis on IMAGINED, fusion energy powering the sun. That was ecades before the Soviets first sent anything into even earth orbit.

The popular press has long given us sci fi. In the 1950s when I was in college studying physics the Tampa (Florida) Tribune, the region’s major dally newspaper, reported on progress toward perpetual motion. Press releases don’t report science.
