Living our life fully and deeply requires courage. If we cannot be happy, right here and right now, we need to ask ourselves why. If we’re having difficulty touching peace and the wonders of the cosmos in our daily life, there must be something getting in the way. We need to find out what it is. What’s weighing us down or pulling us away from the present moment?

The art of living happily is also the art of transforming our afflictions. If we want to be happy, we need to identify what is preventing us from being happy. The path to well-being is the path out of ill-being. Sometimes we suffer but we don’t dare to admit it to ourselves, let alone to others. However, only by facing our suffering can we find the way out, the path to well-being.”

I doubt spiritual beliefs, or lack thereof, have much to do with one's level of personal happiness.
But it might have SOMETHING to do with it; with loss of faith one gains a sense of freedom from burdensome religious guilt, from books, people, tv, deep-seated conditioning, etc.
Once free of THAT, it might make dealing with other problems easier, if not solved.
However, some things might get harder! Maybe a 'crutch' is lost, or friends disappear, or gone is the comfort 'god' is intimately involved in your life.
Like drinking...stop, and lots of things get better; BUT lots of lesser things get lost. It takes time and effort to sort it all out.
Overall, I feel closer to the truth, more appreciative of my life in general, which makes it a net gain.
That said, it's very hard for me to accept many of the things about the way I am. Nor do I think I SHOULD accept them, if I think they can be ultimately improved.
Tricky.
One thing makes me feel better is knowing in the end it really doesn't MATTER all that much!

Yes, but how? There's always a diagnosis, but how about a treatment?

@MissKathleen I'm guessing that's different from being complacent, uninvolved, and apathetic.

Usually our suffering is caused by our attachment to things that are causing us to suffer: Our love for a deceased spouse, our desire for a better job, higher social status, etc. The solution is to emotionally detach.

@dare2dream I agree detaching emotionally from the superficial pursuit of money, power, false teachings, etc., Is good, but only if it's genuine.
If it's not, you're better off admitting it to yourself and accepting it.

Wise words. Learning to live by myself will take time. I'm happy for the first time in a long time. Wasn't sure how I would feel living alone. I like it and I like me again. Getting the negativity out of my life has given me a chance to feel good about myself again. I have choices now. I have freedom now. I am building my own world. I still have highs and lows like everyone else but I decide how I want to feel about my children and friends I've made. No one else can tell me how to feel.
