Do we have any idea how many members are actually active say since the start of December? I look at some profiles and realise that that person has written nothing for a year or even more.
My immediate response is; so what do you propose to do about that? Is there a minimum participation number? Maybe they are on a year-long voyage on a sailboat around the world? Is there a participation-or-else clause?
No. That's not at all what I meant. Anyway I'm telling myself to give up on this site because I realise it is rather addictive and I don't allow myself addictions.
@rogerbenham Oh, come on, addiction? Does it mean you are enjoying yourself too much? Were you a methodist in a former life?
@Spinliesel What fun! A follower of Wesley? No such luck. I first gave up vodka at 27 when I came here and switched to marijuana. Way cheaper and glad to get of the alcohol. At 40 quit cigarettes because I heard a programme saying if one did that by 50 one would be cleaned out. How long had I been enjoying it? Not for many years but I found it hard to stop. I finally quit by betting a best friend $1,000.00. It worked. Quit marijuana at 52. Knew that I had not really enjoyed it after the first few years. Recognised that I was addicted. I do not want something controlling my life so I quit. Never to smoke it again. Never really got into beer until 1989 when I went back to England for 5 months. I didn't like beer made out of maise. But then home brewed, made loads. That lasted about 11 years. Then again drastically reduced. Now one or two a week at the most. Finally Dec 2018 quit looking at Facebook because I was doing it around 5 hours a day. Now I must quit Agnostic because I'm spending many hours looking at it. I have better things to do.
Your final question: I have been an ascetic philosopher since I was 30. No god stuff but hopefully spiritual. As Monty Python said, you cannot make fun of Jesus because everything he said was good. Belief in God or son of God is quite another matter. I never could do that. And the whole darn religious thing was politically founded . The stories often harked back to ancient Egyptian beliefs.
@rogerbenham I am a follower of nobody. Who is Wesley? I was an atheist at 11. Your addictions go like a sine wave; very impressive that you are able to define them so clearly. All of mine are actually habits. I hold them close to my heart, enjoy them, then put them away again. Like Keith Richards said to Ron Wood:" we'll take that up again when we're in our 70s and in pain."
The overriding theme of my life is tattooed on my back:
Sá sem lifir án aga, deyr án heiðurs.
He who lives without discipline dies without honor.
That is a Viking saying and the only thing that still makes sense to me.
I wish you good luck and say farewell. It was nice meeting you here.
@Spinliesel John Wesley 1703 – 1791) was an English cleric, theologian and evangelist who was a leader of a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism.
Mine is a Sufi concept: In huruf maani naderand. It is the secret of life in ancient Persian. These words have no meaning.
I will just gradually fade away. Farewell.
I join these types of sites to participate. I don't know why others join & then can't be bothered.
If you click on the doohickey with the lines going upwards (all the way to the right at the top of the page) - it will bring you to the second picture... that gives you a fair indicator of how many folks are actually online at a time. It varies by time of day.
What's interesting is sometimes folks who haven't been here for a year or more show up again.
But we do have a lot of "One and dones". They create an account and seem to forget about it.
Weekends have the most traffic. Group hosts get some stats. I presume we all see similar patterns.
Six. . Or it seems that way!
Who are the other 5?
@Marionville You, Skado, Sticks, Bill Fleming and Moravian
@Geoffrey51 The Relevants!
