America’s Radioactive Secret

Oil-and-gas wells produce nearly a trillion gallons of toxic waste a year. An investigation shows how it could be making workers sick and contaminating communities across America
As it turns out fracked oil produces about 9 gallons of radioactive brine for every gallon of oil. Most are reinjected back in the ground but much is spread on roads as a deicer. The runoff ends up in the fields and streams polluting with radioactive salts. Truck drivers and the public are getting sick and developing cancer. Formally labeling the “billions of barrels of waste” as hazardous would “cause a severe economic impact on the industry.” Effectively, the EPA determined that in order for oil-and-gas to flourish, its hazardous waste should not be defined as hazardous.

This is the kind of thing that made me decide to never have children of my own, almost 50-years ago. You just cannot keep adding new people to the planet, plus offering them higher standards of living and not have stuff like this going on. The pendulum is certainly swinging back now after a few decades of trying to make air, water, food and working condition safer, now the gov't is just saying, "Aw, screw-it... all those rules were just too much trouble. Just do whatever you want." I have no kids or grands to worry about but it breaks my heart to see things like this happening... for the animals.

The entire fracked oil system is riddled with criminally negligent pollution and health endangerment, which affects communities. Nothing good can be said for the way it continues without oversight in regard to being hazardous material, and yet is handled as if by-products are safe. Not so!

The radioactivity is new information for me. I was somewhat aware of the concerning levels of lead, arsenic, barium but wasn't aware of the uranium. I also wasn't aware that the oil companies were getting rid of their waste by giving it to cash strapped counties in Pennsylvania and Ohio among others to spread over our country. Sometimes I hear people wonder why cancer rates keep going up. Now we know. It's time to transition to nonpolluting renewables and quit subsidizing coal, oil, and gas.

@rogueflyer The radioactivity is more shocking news to me too.

My wife was an investigative reporter on the environmental beat in the 90s, and don't get her started on the dismantling of the EPA and the ruination of much of the progress made on environmental matters over many decades. Corporate 'Murica has always opposed environmental responsibility as too expensive and burdensome.

And hell, we haven't even factored climate change into the discussion yet.
