It’s true that loneliness is an opportunity to get to know oneself, to learn to be independent as are all challenges. But challenges re adversaries and struggles.

It is also true that loneliness leads to a life lacking in meaning and shallow purpose.

If loneliness is so great, I'm starting to see why suicide is so popular.

I can truly say that the loneliest I have ever felt was when I was married to "such a fine man". Now every day is full of sunshine, plans have made, things to look forward to

I live alone, not lonely!!!

I am not happy, nor unhappy!!!

I have never felt more alive, and unencumbered!!!

It so opposite of my life I live for so many years!!!

The cost is age, my changed older body, and my needs taking care of without need to accumulate useless things that I have no real place in my life anymore!!!

I’m glad Ms. Hale wrote of loneliness, not of the more socially acceptable aloneness or solitude.

As long as it is a little bit, too much can be painful

Maybe true in a sense. But it ignores the fact, that it is the usual custom in English, to split negative and positive aloneness, by calling them loneliness and solitude. It therefore creates a false misconception, by creating the straw man argument, that people have not already observed that aloneness can be a positive as well as a negative experience.

It has been pointed out that. You can be more alone in a crowded sub-way, than on an empty mountain side. Loneliness is I think, more about lacking a feeling of communication, either with others, with yourself, or even with and abstraction such as nature, than it is about physical apartness; which can in fact cut out the noise and lead to more true communication.

I have two cats a dog and myself. If the four of us are bored or lonely, somethings wrong.

In exactly the same position. Some people assume I’m lonely but for many yrs now I never really feel lonely. Sometime it surprises me but in reality I am quite content. I’ve never needed to be part of a group etc, and detest parties so learned to enjoy my own company.

Yes, my three cats which have adopted me, have made my life a happy one, they do keep me busy without too much of what might be considered drama!

Besides that, you win all the arguments. I hope.

I get rid of distractions, focus on what is really important to me, and resolve to strengthen that. I resolve what to do to live to the utmost.

Hey, I gave up religion. Is there any evidence for this? Any at all?

@MissKathleen being alone all the time is killing me.

@BitFlipper You're never alone with a dog.

@PondartIncbendog I think a dog would violate the terms of the treatment.
