Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.One reason, is to encourage peopel to participate and contribute to the site. You also get points fgor promoting the site.
Another reason, is until you reach level 5 your posts have to be approved before going out without review. This keeps the haters off the site, which makes the site much better and a lot mroe enjoyable.

Don't get too hung up on the points/levels as they are mostly just a way for us to keep scammers away. However, they also give us a way to give more access/perks to members who contribute time and thought. Thanks for the question!
