@Marionville we still have to go to Everett for my folks (looking like my stepdad will be in hospice soon enough) at least once a month, but we've basically got a 2 year moratorium on traveling anywhere - except to go see her daughter.

@JackPedigo Thank you...I must have passed through Everett without knowing it because my husband and I drove down from. Vancouver to Seattle in 1979...would have travelled further but I discovered I was pregnant with my second son and was suffering from bad morning sickness (more like all day sickness), so we flew home from Seattle.

@Marionville in 1979 driving down I-5 the only indication you were in Everett was the smell, so good thing you didn't notice.

@Marionville Everett was the place Boeing built what was, then, the largest building in the world. The 747's were built there. Now many of the bigger jets, 777, 787 and so on are there. On my way to Seattle there is always a traffic jam on the freeway through Everett and it is where an unusual weather pattern called the conversion zone takes place. [en.wikipedia.org]

@JackPedigo the convergence zone got us, and this is no shit, a touch over 3 inches of rain in 50 minutes last spring in about a 40 to 50 block area - and .1 inch everywhere else.

@1of5 I seem to hit it often going to Seattle. Funny, but I lived in Heidelberg Germany for 15 years. There are two small mountain ranges (Heilengenberg and Konigstuhl) next to the city with a river in between. The area's weather had been hard to predict because of the convergence zone. The military forecasters always got it wrong but the Germans figured it out and usually got it right.

@JackPedigo convergence zone weather is so hard to predict. We got better forecasts living on Samish than we did in Everett, which I guess is good from a staying alive standpoint. Although Everett forecasts in the winter are usually nothing but how hard it'll rain that day and how far above or below 48 deg it'll be (usually +/- 5).

I still don't trust weather forecasts that are more than 3 days out. Sucked when trying to figure out when to get a truck for the move.

@1of5 Interesting, Samish is a ways from Everett. When I was on a dating site I was conversing with a woman that lived on Samish and worked at the bread research place in Bow. We never did hook up but when traveling to Bellingham I take the Chuckanut drive. Every time I go through Bow/Edison and pass the bread factory I think of this person.

@JackPedigo used to ride our 10 speeds into Bow.

Chuckanut drive is so nice, much better than 5. You used to be able to stop and dig fossiles out of the hillside in a couple places along it. Ever eat at the oyster bar? It used to be really good.

@1of5 Not an oyster fan. With all our rains the last time I tried to go the route it was closed due to avalanches. The road does come pretty close to the cliff-sides and it can be scary even in good weather.

@JackPedigo local seafood and stuff, but terrific oysters. We used to row down to Blau's oysters (on Samish) and steal a sting of oysters (at night) and shuck and eat them on the beach.

Yeah, it can be, but the views are worth it!

@1of5 Sorry, I really never developed a taste for oysters. Mussels (cooked) are good. I noticed sever Oyster places along the drive. Any Oyster places in the Tri-cities?

I like the winding road, the views, solitude and it gets me off I-5.

@JackPedigo I grew up eating them. My grandfolks had a place on hood canal where you just walked along the beach and picked them up at low tide. Easier than digging steamers. Think the local Anthony's will be about it. Oh well.

@1of5 Often things we like are learned. I grew up in Texass and never got an appreciation for oysters.
